CONSERVATIONIST and reptile specialist Crocodile Joe has been recognised for his tireless work with abandoned, abused and neglected reptiles.

The RSPCA, the UK's largest animal charity, presented Crocodile Joe with the award for his dedication to animal welfare.

Following his return from Australia, Crocodile Joe has worked with the RSPCA rescuing, rehabilitating and, where possible, re-homing hundreds of reptiles.

As the only north west-based reptile expert who is approved by the RSPCA, Crocodile Joe is inundated with requests to provide secure and specialist care for abused reptiles, often heading out in the middle of the night to help with rescues.

Crocodile Joe also works with the police, fire service and even customs and excise when snakes or other potentially dangerous animals are found and need capturing and safely relocating.

Crocodile Joe said “I am delighted to receive this award. I feel very lucky and privileged to work with and help these beautiful animals.

"Unfortunately we are seeing a steady rise in the amount of reptiles being abandoned or mistreated, but we will continue to educate people in what these specialised animals need, advising on which make good pets and which don't.

"I would love to do more and open my own dedicated rescue centre as there are so many reptiles needing our help, but we currently don't have the land or funds to make it happen.

"I would like to thank the RSPCA for this award and look forward to continuing our work together.”
