THIS atmospheric old photograph was taken in 1949 so just four years after the end of World War Two.

We feel it is particularly poignant as it appears to show a long lost view of Bolton — that of mill chimneys gracing the skyline and homes boasting chimneys.

In 1949 each home would have a chimney as most would be fuelled by a coal fire.

The two images show Valletts Lane looking towards Chorley Old Road and the farm on the left of our original picture is Ropers Farm. Do any of our readers know anything more about the farm or the family living there?

We can see an elderly woman walking up the road, perhaps carrying her shopping from a trip into town. It would appear that in those days there would not be public transport available and she possibly had already walked the length of the lane from either the shops in Chorley Old Road or, perhaps, Bolton Town Centre.

Readers who can recall Bolton in the late 1940s and early 1950s will, no doubt, recall a gentler pace of life and a time when you knew your neighbours and could rely on those neighbours for help in times of trouble.
