THIS photograph brought back memories for Frank Woolley who recognised the view.

Frank, who now lives in Harrogate, lived in one of the houses that can be seen on the image — in fact it was bought by his grandparents when it was built in the early 1900s.

John and Mary Briggs had moved from Darwen to the area in 1888 and lived, firstly, at 70 Cox Green Road before moving further down the road, to number 23 which is where Frank grew up with his parents, Harry and Nellie.

He has fond memories of living in this part of Bolton and recalls hay making on the land just behind the young woman and her dog before, of course, the land was built on.

Frank eventually bought the house next door to his parents' — in 1958 — when he and Mildred were married and it cost them the princely sum of £650 for a large, three bedroomed terraced property.

The properties were built by the Walsh family, explains 82-year-old Frank, who was delighted to be sent the Looking Back photograph by his sister-in-law who still lives in Bolton.

"It brought back plenty of memories including the cotton mill in Hardmans Lane which was called Garnett's Mill and was, during the war, used for storage and then became Markland Scowcroft," he explains.
