TODAY’S Looking Back photograph shows a road in Bolton that most of our readers will immediately recognise.
It is, of course, Chorley New Road in Heaton.
On the left hand side we can see part of Queens Park with its pretty trees and a large lawned area.
Sadly today the park has iron railings around it but in August 1961, when this photograph was taken, it was open to the public day and night.
Another rather significant feature of this pretty scene is the lack of traffic in Chorley New Road.
Today it would be very difficult to take a picture showing just one car in the scene.
Cars were not so plentiful 56 years ago and most people would travel by public transport.
Trams, trains and buses would grace our streets and provide much needed transport for workers, shoppers and families heading for a day out.
Queens Park was a popular leisure spot, particularly for families with children, who could easily spend a day there enjoying all this beautiful park had to offer.
