TODAY’S photograph shows a very special celebration in Farnworth in 1955.

The men’s and women’s fraternities of St Gregory’s RC Church were strongly represented in the Mayoral procession in the town when two of their fellow members, the Mayor Councillor J M White and his sister Mrs E M Ramsden, the Mayoress, and members and officials of the council attended a civic service at St Gregory’s Church.

Also in the procession were Mr E Thornton MP and Councillor W Holehouse, chairman of Kearsley Council. The address in the crowded church was given by the Rev J O’Dwyer, parish priest, who was the Mayor’s chaplain and the Missa Cantata was conducted by Father L Murray.

The procession made its way through the streets of Farnworth and local people gathered to watch.
