THESE youngsters were spending a week in police custody and they were not complaining at all.

That is because the 16 children — eight boys and eight girls — were spending five days on an annual barge holiday back in September 1989 on a trip organised by the Bolton Police community contact department.

The local youngsters were selected to go on the trip along the Leeds Liverpool canal by their schools or the police as a result of the children’s “community spirit”.

They were accompanied by police officers Stuart Ashall, David Hardy, Samantha Wood and Debbie Hamer.

Bolton police officers helped to finance the trip with a sponsored walk.

Other contributions came from the Mayor’s charity fund and GMP’s community relations branch.

The youngsters were set to be joined, during the holiday, by Bolton’s Mayor Councillor Ken MacIvor as well as Chief Supt Ken Moores who was head of Bolton Police at the time. Judging by the smiles the children they were looking forward to the trip.
