THESE two photographs show Church Wharf in Bolton town centre but not as we know it today.

The top picture was taken in early 1967 before the construction of St Peter’s Way when early demolition work had first started.

The church tower, on the horizon, right, is St John’s Fold Church which closed in 1970.

In the second picture we see an area of land which Bolton Town Council decided could be used “for an unusual housing development”.

Members of the council felt it would be a challenge to build on the land which was north of Churchgate and Churchbank and rising up from the River Croal.

The land was approved for housing purposes back in February 1967, although the Housing Committee voted against the scheme.

This particular picture was taken from the rear of the ABC cinema showing, once again, Church Wharf.

Both photographs show a very different part of town than we see today if looking at the scene.
