WE imagine there will be plenty of local people who can immediately recognise exactly what this photograph is illustrating.

If you do not live in Westhoughton — or are not from the Bolton area — you may well be wondering why there is a cow’s head popping through what looks to be a gate or fence.

Apparently the Howfen Keawyed legend was alive on kicking in Westhoughton back in August 1982 when this photograph was taken thanks to Westhoughton pub landlord Eddie Jones and regular Bob Roberts.

It was the start of Wakes weekend in Westhoughton and 29-year-old former slaughterman Bob decided there was something missing.

Where were the traditional Wakes pasties and peas?

And apparently Wakes weekend in “Keawyed City” would not be complete without the traditional cow’s head on the bar of his favourite pub which was the Victoria in Market Street. Here we see Bob Roberts (left), pub landlady Mrs Ann Jones, landlord Eddie Jones and customer Kevin Swift.
