CROWDS mill about in a part of Bolton town centre that today is far less busy.

This is Howell Croft South as seen by one of our, then, Bolton Evening News photographers, in June, 1978.

It was a day when Princess Anne was in the town on a royal visit so that will most probably be the reason for the large number of people.

It is fascinating to see so many people walking around the area that is at the edge of Bolton Town Hall and where Beales Department Store used to be before closing recently.

Our town centre architecture has always been the envy of other towns and it is little wonder.

This part of town is stunning with its splendid buildings including the Civic Centre which was ready for occupation in 1932.

Bolton Town Hall was built between 1866 and 1873 for the County Borough of Bolton to designs by William Hill of Leeds and George Woodhouse of Bolton.

The Town Hall was extended in the 1930s to the designs of Bradshaw, Gass and Hope and has been designated a Grade II listed building by English Heritage.
