BOLTON Holidays were celebrated and observed in the town for at least 100 years.

Until quite recently businesses would close down and allow all the workers time off to either relax at home with their families or head for the seaside.

Resorts such as Blackpool, Southport and seaside towns in Wales would prepare for the influx of families from inland towns who would head in their droves for the beaches.

This would be a time to take a break from the daily hustle and bustle of what would generally be the mills here in Bolton.

It seems that workers from the mills would meet up with their colleagues while on holiday and enjoy spending their leisure time together.

We know that here at what was then The Bolton Evening News we would send photographers and reporters out to the resorts to find out how our fellow townsfolk were getting on while on their holidays.

Pictures of them would then appear in the same day’s Evening News as they basked in the sunshine on South Pier at Blackpool or on the sand in Southport.

Today the traditional holidays are not observed in the same way.
