THIS very old photograph shows an area of Bolton town centre most of us know very well indeed.

It is very close to our offices and a street most of us will have walked down at one time or another.

You may well not have recognised the scene but it is Newport Street where once there were, quite clearly, tram or trolley bus tracks and the street was cobbled or laid out with setts.

There were various interesting looking shops on either side of Newport Street including a Post Office and the old fashioned looking street furniture helps to date when the picture was taken.

We do know though that it was taken in around 1902 when Newport Street looked very different to today.

Some of the properties would be homes intertwined among the many businesses that were set up in the street.

If you look closely you will realise exactly where this is — rather than being the end of Newport Street which leads to Victoria Square it is the other end where you would access the railway station.
