PUPILS from the junior and infant department of Castle Hill County Primary School received a special road safety trophy for their use of the Green Cross Code back in May 1973.

The presentation of the Duckhams Trophy was made at morning assembly by Counc David Vause who was vice chairman of Bolton’s Road Safety Committee.

Peter Bowlands, aged 11 and Dawn Sloane, aged six received the award on behalf of the school.

Also at the presentation were Mr Geoffrey Timmington who was the deputy borough engineer and Mr J Walker the road safety officer.

Many of our readers will remember the Green Cross Code.

It was designed to help youngsters cross the road when roads were a lot safer and there were far fewer vehicles encountered by youngsters playing out.

Many children learned the Green Cross Code in school and also from television advertisements.

It looks as if these children had fun at the presentation. What struck us was the fact they were not wearing school uniform.
