THIS photograph was taken in October, 1979.

It shows one of Horwich’s oldest streets which was set to retain its cobbled character — thanks to the efforts of Bolton Council.

George Street is part of a quaint neighbourhood of stone built cottages and narrow streets.

Sadly it was ripped up for the installation of gas services which caused some concern for local residents who were worried it would not be restored to its former glory.

The quickest and easiest method of resurfacing was to use tarmac along the 80 metre stretch.

But thankfully Bolton Highway Authority decided that this lovely, ancient cobbled street which is in a conservation area was well worth preserving.

So local stonemason Alan Fearnley, of Wingates Grove, Westhoughton, was given the job of restoring it following the culmination of the work.

Apparently Alan had learned this very special skill from his uncle who was, no doubt, inundated with work in his working life.
