A NUMBER of our readers correctly identified last week’s photograph.
It was, of course, Market Street in the town centre and as Alyson Cullen remarks, the photograph was taken looking down at the side entrance of what was then the Market Hall.“I think the cafe you can see on the right hand side was called ‘Toggs’. Not sure if that is the correct spelling. I remember going there with my mum in the mid to late sixties as a little girl.
“As I remember, customers had to go upstairs to the cafe which in my mind was much bigger than it probably really was. I always had an ice cream float — fizzy pop, usually limeade, with a dollop of ice cream in it. It was a real treat because we couldn’t afford pop at home. I wonder if anyone else remembers Toggs?” Correct answers also came from Philip Page, Alan Hurst, Stephen Ashcroft, Jand Shirley Harrison. who recalls Tognarellas which is, no doubt, the 'Toggs' Alyson remembers.
