THIS charming photograph was taken at a boating lake which no longer exists in Bolton.
Here we see families having fun at what was the stretch of water at Barrow Bridge.
We have it on good authority from our knowledgeable readers that the secluded area was once a desirable tourist attraction.
But more importantly, Barrow Bridge was a destination for local people who, tired after a week working in the mills, headed there on a Sunday afternoon for some relaxation.
Aside from the large boating lake and its crafts there were refreshments served — some from the front gardens of people’s homes.
Forward-thinking residents realised the potential that was there thanks to their good fortune to be living in such a gorgeous spot and they capitalised on it by setting up a tea room on the lawn.
People flooded into Barrow Bridge, often by bus, and they had the added advantage of Moss Bank Park being close by.
It was a very popular spot and still attracts walkers today.
