THESE pictures show a part of Bolton that many of you will be immediately familiar with.

It is Bury Road in Breightmet seen from two different directions and in two different decades.

The top picture shows workmen busy at the junction of Milnthorpe Road and Bury Road when the, then new, dual-carriageway section was being built.

Many of us have driven along this dual carriageway but perhaps did not realise it was built in 1968.

It was officially opened in September of 1968 and at the time Cllr Norman Eccleshare complained about the dangers to traffic emerging “blind” from Milnthorpe Road and it was closed again. Improvements seen being carried out here were expected to eliminate that problem.

The other photograph was taken in December 1975 and shows when a recently installed pedestrian crossing was helping people cross Bury Road.

The scene looks remarkably similar today.
