THIS picture shows a home that no longer exists.

It is a picture of Smithills Old People’s Home seen in January 1974.

The residential home no longer exists.

In the story that accompanied this photograph heavy rain had flooded the adjoining meadow to a depth of about four feet — 1.2 metres in new money — earlier in the week.

The rain also did considerable damage, apparently, in the nearby Raveden Wood nature trail.

Here, several wooden bridges were washed downstream by the force of the water in Raveden Brook. Smithills Hall has always been a popular haunt for local people and also for visitors from afar.

It must have been a rather lovely place for elderly folk to live back in the 1970s.

The Hall is a Grade 1 listed manor house and is set in 2,000 acres of land. It is one of the oldest and best preserved manor houses in the North West of England.
