BOLTON’S “hello” girls, as they were fondly nicknamed, will not be saying goodbye after all, says our caption back in March 1980.
British Telecom scrapped the main part of a major rationalisation plan which would have meant the loss of at least 100 jobs at Bolton telephone exchange.
Instead it became a main directory enquiries centre for a section of BT’s Lancashire and Cumbria area.
