THE leader of Bolton Council has strongly denied internet rumours that he is about to resign.
Speculation surfaced on social media on Friday over the future of Cllr Cliff Morris, after his Twitter and Facebook accounts were rebranded.
However, in the week that The Bolton News joined the Fighting Fake News campaign, he said there was no truth to the rumours.
Cllr Morris said: “A free and highly qualified press is so important to moderating the often bizarre claims we find online. And I fully support The Bolton News’ ‘Fighting Fake News’ campaign.”
He added: “Social media has also become an essential part of our democracy, engaging with the public and creating a space from people to ask questions of decision makers.
“There has been a slight change to my social media handle, but you can still find news and updates @BoltonLeader, and as always I invite people to take a look, share and ask questions.”
Cllr Morris has come under pressure recently over the Asons grant scandal, and a petition calling for his resignation was handed to the mayor at a council meeting earlier this year.
