90 jobs at Royal Bolton Hospital at risk

About 90 jobs could be axed at the Royal Bolton Hospital as part of £6.6million in cuts.

Nursing, administration and technical staff posts will all be axed, while £600,000 will be saved by treating some patients within a day rather than keeping them in overnight.

Hospital bosses revealed the savings as they confirmed that £11 million would be pumped into the site for work on the maternity super-centre, general improvements and the introduction of complex heart surgery.

That cash has come from the hospital's separate capital budget, which funds one-off major investments.

Managers say at least 64 posts will be cut, although they insist many vacant positions will simply not be filled. Staff representatives say they fear the cost-cutting is a sign of the creeping privatisation of the service.

Hospital chief executive David Fillingham said: "We are committed to avoiding redundancies.

"Forty-seven of the 64 posts are already vacant and about 400 people a year leave the hospital."

He added that the job cuts could eventually total "90 plus".

The need for savings has been driven by funding cuts, Government demands that the NHS should be more efficient and a loan repayment.

Posts to go include 32 in administration, around 24 from nursing and midwifery, and around six from the scientific, therapeutic and technical departments.

Harry Hanley, secretary of Staff Side, which represents workers at the hospital, added: "People want to know why they're being told on a drip-feed basis about cuts.

"It's staggering to see what cuts have been made over the last three years. Is this a conscious decision to cut services from the NHS, or is it a conscious decision to provide the same service in the private sector?"

Cllr Andy Morgan, chairman of Bolton Council's health scrutiny committee, said: "This is the fifth year in a row staff have been asked to find these scale of cuts.

"Patients already contact me to tell me they or a family member were discharged too early. This will only increase."

Among the planned capital investments are £2.5 million to build the maternity super-centre, £1.8 million to move the health records department from a disused ward to free up space for clinical use and almost £1.2 million on the introduction of new complex heart surgery.

General maintenance and fire precautions will cost £1.5 million, £720,000 on improving X-rays in orthopaedics and £603,000 in clinical equipment.

Why are any nurses being cut at all? They are the overworked ones. Cut the bean-counters and clip-board holders and everyone will benefit. I remember when a few almoners used to run the administration of that hospital and the wards were spotless.

A rising population, a decreasing number of hospital staff.

Excellent planning there by New Labour, guess the New part somes up at to why they have lost touch with their roots.

Bring home the troops!

Yet another glareing example of this country's downfall at the hands of this b1oody govenment, what excuses will Browns Clowns have for this infringement of OUR human rights? What targets will he set for hospital ward closures? This knee jerk govenment is a total and utter disgrace and should be all prosecuted for causing death and misery to the GROWING population of this country.

I believe that the ratio of managers to nurses is almost equal.
A ridiculous amount of management all busy trying to justify their own existence.
Many of them serve no purpose and they know it, so I hope it is these that are laid off rather than nurses.

My mum works as a manager there and I wouldn't call her position useless - she's the office manager of the radiology block, which is most definitely an important department in a hospital.

Contrary to your beliefs, a hospital isn't ran by just doctors and nurses, you have to think about administration, which ensures the best possible communication between the medical staff.

A ready-made headline for the 'fill in the blanks' round of the quiz?

The economy is on the slide. Now here come the cuts in public services.

Have to say though. Getting rid of pen-pushing, non-jobers would have been a stealthlier way of doing it.
Labour Government - Inept, hippy, limp wristed, socialist jobsworths to the bitter end. fiddling whilst Rome burns.

I wasn't singling out individual managers that actually serve a purpose and do a good job, I was getting at the ones that are in a position that serve no purpose.
I know what I'm talking about, my wife has been with the NHS for a very long time.
Ask your Mum, and see what she thinks about the amount of managers.

Why are so many jobs being axed when there is a shortage of medical staff to serve the population of Bolton? This is the Labour government again! Surely having the Leader of the council, Cliff Morris as Chairman of the hospital is a conflict of interest?

Qualified staff with many years experience are being replaced by unqualified staff, who are cheaper to employ. It's no coincidence that the rate of incidents are complaints are on the rise
