FESTIVAL season may be well and truly over but the creatives behind Manchester-based club night Illuminaughty aren’t phased — they’re simply bringing it indoors.

Circus performers, goblin fancy dress, market stalls, stilt walkers, unique decorations and DJs from around the world will make up the festival atmosphere at the Manchester Academy on November 2.

Lefteris Angelidis, one of the brainchilds behind the event, created the idea along with Heather Penny in 2006 in an attempt to stand out next to the two-a-penny club nights which were peppering the city’s venues.

Starting modestly at Club Zoo, the night grew until they were reaching crowds of 1,500 at The Ritz just a couple of years ago.

Now settled in their new venue, Manchester Students’ Union Academy building and spreading over four floors, this year’s Halloween offering themed ‘The Afterlife’ will be their biggest yet — and Bolton students have the chance to get last-minute discounted tickets.

Lefteris said: “Initially we were just a psytrance event with one room but we decided that we wanted to give it more of a festival feel with market stalls, big visuals, more performers and installations using multiple rooms, with different genres in each room.

“I wanted to do something different because every club night was very generic and just about the DJs.

“So we put on a night at Club Zoo in Manchester which incorporated psytrance along with big decorations and performers.

“That went well for a debut night so we decided to do it again six months later, and did that for two years until we moved to the Ritz and it just exploded.

“But unfortunately after HMV bought it they could only offer us week night dates, which wasn’t what we wanted. So for a year and a half after that we had no venue, which to go from nearly 1,500 crowds to nothing was really hard.”

Despite this set back, its new home at Manchester’s students’ union building has given the team more scope to expand.

Lefteris said: “When we went to Manchester Academy that’s where Illuminaughty changed.

“We have three rooms inside — Heaven, Hell and Purgatory.

“Heaven is the top floor and is the original psytrance Illuminaughty, Purgatory is electro swing and ghetto house, which has a more ‘happy’ vibe and is in the main bar area, then in Club Academy at the bottom we have Hell, which is breaks, psy breaks and electro house.

“Also because you can’t smoke inside anymore we didn’t want those having a smoke to miss out on the music, so we’ve put a marquee and a rig outside thanks to Drop Productions.

“All this makes it our biggest party yet. That’s why we want to expand further than just Manchester — and Bolton is the next obvious place.”

Tickets are £17 advance or more on the door. Bolton students can get an advance ticket for £15 by putting in the code ‘BOLTON’ when buying from illuminaughty.co.uk.
