Number one hit is just what Tom Wanted

By Kat Dibbits »

LESS than 12 months ago, Tom Parker was at home in Tonge Moor wondering whether his dreams of becoming a pop star would ever come true.

But on Sunday there was little doubt left as his band, The Wanted, took the top spot in the official singles chart with their debut single, All Time Low.

The CD single had sold out on website Amazon.com by Thursday, and outsold its nearest rival Yolanda B Cool vs D Cup with We No Speak Americano by around 10,000 copies.

Tom said: "I can’t quite believe that a year ago I was sat in Bolton, doing nothing, dreaming about being in the music industry and with thanks to a certain lady called Jayne Collins, and obviously my mum and dad, they’ve made it all possible!

“And last but not least the fans for going out buying it and getting it to number one.”

Tom is joined in the band by former Bolton School pupil Max George, from Worsley, and by Siva Kaneswaren, Jay McGuinness and Nathan Sykes.

The 21-year-old won his place in The Wanted after a nine month audition process, having previously been in a Take That tribute band, where he took the role of Mark Owen.

He has cited The Stereophonics and Liam Gallagher as musical influences, as well as his brother, who encouraged him to start playing the guitar when he was 16.

Once the excitement of the weekend has worn off the group will be focussing on the release of their as-yet unnamed debut album, which they have been writing with the help of music supremo Guy Chambers, the man responsible for some of Robbie Williams’ biggest hits, including Rock DJ and Angels. The album will be released through major label Universal, and the company’s boss has tipped them for success in America.

They recently supported McFly at their huge concert at Haigh Hall, and have previously appeared with The Saturdays, with whom they share a management company.
