THE long awaited debut album from local geniuses Islands Lost At Sea will be released in April... just months after the first batch were melted down by a narrow-minded record label.
Signed to a Manchester indie label a few months after forming, from a six track demo, the Bolton three-piece went on to host sold-out club and gig nights in their hometown of Bolton. A request from Imogen Heap to support her at The Bridgewater Halls and a set at The Wychwood Festival followed, in between stints in the studio.
Working with a producer didn’t allow them the freedom they needed so they took the reins and recorded in various locations including, pubs, dining rooms, a Lord’s manor, a hobby studio and a flat in Salford.
The recording environments had an open door policy allowing friends and family members to pop in as they pleased.
Having such an open environment lent itself to a lot of experimenting. If you listen carefully you’ll hear arthritic thumbs being clicked to create kick drum sounds, jean zippers being used as cymbols, happy slap videos being used as hits, mandolins, double bass, violins, harmonica, floors, boxes, synths, loops, samples, trumpet, flutes, cups on tea and just about anything they could lay their hands on.
However there was a growing tension between Islands Lost At Sea and their former label about the direction the boys were expected to take and things ended messily in 2009 when the label incinerated all copies of the album after manufacturing them.
The album, titled Are Having A Lovely Time, will be released on April 12, and will be preceded by a single, Sun Song, on April 5.
The launch night will be held on April 10 at the Dog and Partridge, Manor Street.
