They may be on the road to celebrate their 30th anniversary together but last night in Colne, The Blockheads showed they are still one of the hardest rocking groups on the circuit.

The gig started with Phill Jupitus - frontman for the tour in place of the late, great Ian Dury - coming out to "have a chat" with the audience.

He jokingly said that he wouldn't tell any gags because he wasn't getting paid enough - but then went on to have the crowd in hysterics with a selection of anecdotes involving Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood.

But while the impromptu comedy gig was good, the main event was even better.

Not only did we get treated to a raft of hits, including Sex and Drugs and Rock n Roll and Reasons To Be Cheerful, the band played the whole of the seminal New Boots And Panties album.

The musicians were, as expected, ultra-tight and having Jupitus as lead singer - alongside Derek The Draw - worked brilliantly.

It was obvious that the tubby Nevermind The Buzzcocks star was the biggest fan of all and he summed it up perfectly when he said that the experience of being on stage with his idols was like a "twilight zone version of Jim'll Fix It".

The Colne Muni is fast gaining a reputation for putting on cracking bands and The Blockheads justified that reputation with a stunning set.
