Oh Boy! It's the Non-Stop Sixties Concert Review
FANS of 60's music had a field day as legends of that decades' music performed their hits on the Oh Boy! It's The Non-Stop Sixties concert.
Vanity Fare (Early In The Morning', Hitchin' a Ride') were first up - and last up as it was they who, as well as performing their own hits (bar one) provided the musical backing and impeccable vocal harmonies all night.
Blues-man Chris Farlowe, a frequent performer in Bolton, was up next. A powerful voice that commanded attention. He of course served up Handbags and Gladrags' as well as the classic Out Of Time'.
Former Bolton resident PJ Proby took a couple of songs to get into his stride, but when he did he fair belted out Hold Me'. Maria' and Somewhere'. Among his anecdotes were references to his time in Bolton and his legendary drinking (he's been dry for 15 years!)
Mike Pender, the former Searchers; front-man made a mockery of his age as he bounded around the stage. Full of humour as he joked with the sizeable audience, his twelve-string jangly guitar was in evidence as he took us through the very best of The Searchers' hits.
Finally, we had ex-Tremeloes singer Brian Poole who chatted amiably about the sixties whilst recreating the heady sounds of Candyman', Twist and Shout' and Do You Love Me'. He also sup0plied lead voice to Vanity Fare's four-part harmony as they sand Jimmy Brown'.
All the stars came together in a finale - a rollicking version of Games People Play' that had everybody on their feet.
During his set Mike Pender commented that they'd been playing these songs for nigh on 40 years and quipped "And you keep coming to listen to em!"
That's right Mike, for as long as you keep playing em - we'll keep coming
