Stars turn out for charity game

SOAP stars turned out for a charity football match in memory of a cancer victim.

But the Celebrity Allstars team, featuring Andrew Whyment and Alan Halsall, Coronation Street's Kirk Sutherland and Tyrone Dodds, were beaten 6-0 by local team, the Walkden Royal British Legion.

The match was organised by Keith Stott to raise money for St Ann's hospice after his wife Karen died there in August 2005.

Mr Stott arranged for the actors - which also included stars from Hollyoaks and Dream Team - to play at Monton Amateurs Ground, off Granary Lane, Worsley.

It was refereed by Little Lever-based Premier League referee, Mark Halsey.

Mrs Stott, a former care assistant, was just 47 when she died from a brain tumour.

Mr Stott, aged 64, said: "Karen came home from work one day and said she didn't feel very well.

"I called for an ambulance which took her to Hope Hospital. The next day they said she had a cancerous brain tumour."

Since her death Mr Stott, a retired heavy goods driver, and her children, Mark, Terry and Vicky Garstang, have campaigned to raise money for the Little Hulton hospice.

Mr Stott, of Avon Close, Walkden, said: "The hospice was absolutely brilliant."

Mr Stott said he was delighted with the support at today's game.

He said: "It was absolutely fantastic, we had a massive turnout and it was great of the stars to come along."
