Bolton's new long-range footpath - The Rotary Way - is a 50-mile walk around
the town's boundary, split into eight stages.
Launched in May, 2005, to mark the 100th anniversary of Rotary, the seven
local clubs worked for many months to survey established walks as close
to the Bolton boundary as possible.
The resulting Rotary Way - just over 50 miles - is to be included on the
next edition of the Ordnance Survey map for the area.
"Rotarians wanted to give the Bolton area something lasting and of real use
to the people of the town," said Phil Wood, President of the Rotary Club of
Westhoughton, who oversaw the project.
"Members of each club had different sections to walk and survey while
Rotarian Adrian Golland, who had overall charge, surveyed the whole thing.
"To my knowledge Adrian has walked the whole Rotary Way at least twice!"
The 50 miles have been split up into eight suggested stages with beginnings
and ends as near as possible to bus stops.
But The Rotary Way is just one of many ideas on this page.
