Mum joins hospice Midnight Memories walk

DIANE Walsworth will not let anything - even cervical cancer - stop her from taking part in the Midnight Memories Walk for Bolton Hospice.

She has been battling cancer for three years.

And despite having to take part in the eight-mile event in a wheelchair, the mum-of-three is determined to finish and raise as much money as she can.

Mrs Walsworth, aged 30, of Breightmet, who has regular care at Bolton Hospice, has recruited dozens of friends to take part in the walk on June 14 and is appealing for other women to sign up.

She said: "I'm really excited about taking part. A lot of people are doing it because they have been to see me in the hospice and can see how fantastic it is here. I really resisted coming into the hospice because I thought it is where people come to die but it is an amazing place. I thought I had come to a hotel when I first arrived."

Mrs Walsworth, who volunteers at Leverhulme Primary School, underwent a hysterectomy following her diagnosis in June, 2005. She also had four weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Her cancer returned and she began a painful nine-week course of strong chemotherapy in March, 2006.

It failed and last August she began taking a new cancer drug, which is still being trialled.

Though it was beating the cancer, she had to stop taking the drug last October because it was damaging her health.

It was then that Mrs Walsworth - who has three daughters, Jessica, aged seven, Kimberly, aged six, and Chelsea, aged four - went to the hospice.

She said: "It hasn't been an easy three years but we've got through it. I celebrated my 30th birthday in February and that was a real milestone. Leverhulme School have been fantastic, everyone there has been so supportive.

"My husband, Lez, is amazing. The girls know I have cancer but he makes everything as normal as possible for them."

The couple celebrate their 11th wedding anniversary on Saturday.

Mrs Walsworth said: "My doctors have told me not to give up hope because new drugs are being developed all the time. When I am better and back on my feet, we will have a huge celebration."

The Midnight Memories Walk, from Victoria Square, Bolton, to Horwich and back, is in its second year and begins at midnight on June 14.

More than 1,500 women took part in the first midnight walk, which raised £176,000.

The walk is sponsored by Warburtons, Bolton Council and Greater Manchester Police.
