STARRING William Hartnell as The First Doctor, four-part this adventure was first broadcast in the spring of 1964 and has been newly re-mastered.

The Doctor, with companions Susan (Carole Ann Ford, Ian (William Russell) and Barbara (Jacqueline Hill) arrives in fifteenth-century Mexico.

Barbara is proclaimed as the reincarnation of Yetaxa – one of the Aztec goddesses, but when she attempts to stop a human sacrifice – against the Doctor’s advice – she is proclaimed a fake.

The DVD was originally released in 2002, and contains the original extras along with a plethora of new ones.

The obligatory ‘making of’ came with the first incarnation of the DVD along with an amusing ‘South Park’ version of the making of cocoa, utilising the vocal talents of original cast-members John Ringham (Tlotoxl) and Walter Randall (Tonila).

It’s the second disc that is the jewel of this release.

A superb 1969 edition of the factual series ‘Chronicle’, which tells the story of the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the Aztecs is an absorbing history lesson. And Doctor Forever! focuses on the range of toys that have graced the stores since the sixties.

There is also the very first skit (that we know of) from Michael Bentine’s It’s a Square World, starring Bentine and Clive Dunn as a scientist (but looking very much like the First Doctor).

However, the main event is a reconstruction of the four-part story ‘Galaxy 4’.

Using audio recordings, stills, animations, clips and the newly-discovered complete third episode, the whole story is told.

Since we are now unlikely to find copies of episods one, two and four, this seems to be the only way this particular adventure featuring The First Doctor, Steven (Peter Purves) and Vicki (Maureen O’Brien will ever be issued on DVD.

This story opened the third series of the show (and Hartnell’s last).
