THIS was the third adventure to star Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor and was originally broadcast during the spring of 1970.

The Earth has had no contact with Mars Probe 7, a manned spaceflight returning from the red planet, and a rescue mission is mounted; but when that spacecraft arrives home, the astronauts are kidnapped and UNIT gets involved.

An early discovery is that whoever came back from space are not human, the Doctor than goes into space aboard a rocket to find the original Mars Probe to discover what happened to the crew.

Upon discovering the truth, the Doctor must use all his skills to prevent an interplanetary war.

Ambassadors of Death was in the middle of three consecutive seven-part adventures and has been newly remastered utilising the latest technology and the two-disc set comes with a host of extras.

Peter Purves (the First Doctor’s companion Steven Taylor) presents Tomorrows Times, an ongoing feature which looks at the press coverage of the show, very much in a ‘What the Papers Say’ way.

The commentaries feature both Nicholas Courtney (Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart) and Caroline John (Liz Shaw), both of whom have sadly passed away fairly recently.

The Making of featurette goes into detail about the stuntwork as there was a lot of action in the story, and tells of how Caroline John had quite an energetic time of it whilst pregnant.

It was also coincidental that this story was about a troubled space mission as the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission took place whilst the adventure was airing.

Finally, actor watchers can look out for an early Who appearance of Michael Wisher, who went on to play the evil Davros.
