PLAYWRIGHT Joe O’Byrne will return to the Lowry in June with his latest play, Rank.

The story is set in the fictional estate of Paradise Heights, which Joe says was influenced by his own upbringing in Halliwell.

It follows Lisa, who learns the cost of “turning grass” as her taxi business is boycotted by the community under the orders of a local gangster.

Joe said: “We’re attempting to do something on stage that I don’t think has been done before. We’re trying to stage a play that is like a graphic novel — we’re using actors, film and pre-recorded audio to create multimedia layers.”

Two of Joe’s previous plays, The Bench and I’m Frank Morgan, have also been produced at The Lowry.

Joe has also written and directed a film, Lookin’ For Lucky, which was screened at the Salford Film Festival.

Rank will be at the Lowry on Monday and Tuesday. Tickets cost £5. For more details visit thelowry.com or ring 0870 787 5780.
