AWARD winning writer Amanda Whittington’s modern classic Be My Baby, a tale of an unmarried mother set in the 1960s, will be performed at Bury’s The Met next Thursday.
Set in a Mother and Baby Home in 1964 in the North of England, Be My Baby follows the fortunes of Mary, Queenie, Dolores and Norma, all unmarried and all pregnant.
Forcibly sent there, the girls have to cope both with the shame and dawning realisation that they will have to give their babies up for adoption, whether they like it or not.
Despite this, and an overbearing Matron, the girls’ youthful effervescence will keep breaking through as they sing along to the girl-group songs of the period.
Directed by Jason Hudson, this is a moving, often humorous and acutely written piece of drama set to a soundtrack of sixties girl groups such as The Shangri-La’s and The Ronettes.
Northface Theatre Company were winners of Best Drama at The Buxton Fringe festival in 2005 with their production of Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me. Tickets cost £8. To book, visit themet.biz or ring 0161 761 2216.
