So we all know how to apply our lipstick and slap a coat of paint on our nails — or do we? Apparently women are becoming less and less groomed and cutting it in the modelling industry has never been harder nor more confusing.

That’s where top model Alex Leigh steps in. After 15 years in the modelling industry Alex who is originally from Timperley, is opening a Grooming Academy — a modelling course for girls who want to know everything there is to know about the industry.

She will divulge all the trade secrets she has learnt over the years. Over 10 weeks, each week a different industry professional will also be there to give advice to our students.

Every week you take home a gift — including a guide to modelling DVD, followed by make-up samples and discount vouchers.

The classes range from make-up and hair styling lessons to diet and exercise as well as confidence and cat walking lessons.

There is something for everyone. The course culminates in a filmed fashion show where you’ll get a DVD of your own to keep.

I was treated to a taster day with Alex who was keen to point out that her team is not there to turn people into stars. They are not selling you false promises like some agencies do.

A gaggle of girls, including myself, cooed over make-up tips from an artist from Laura Mercier, were wowed by fashion advice from a personal shopper at John Lewis and even strutted their stuff on the catwalk.

We were given a lesson in how to do a quick up-do on our own hair by a top stylist from Nicky Clarke’s salon and bookers from model agencies talked us through how to wow on our first casting.

There were giggles galore — a great way to spend a girly day. It left us begging for more.

This is the perfect present for any teenager who would like a stepping stone into becoming a model or just to learn how to be well-groomed.

Alex, aged 30, has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry including photographer David Bailey and has graced the pages of glossy magazines such as Cosmopolitan.

She said: “I’m so excited about the course. It’s unique and packed full of essential information for any young lady (or more mature woman) who needs expert advice. Whether you want to be a model or just want advice on how to make the best of yourself, this course is for you.”

The 10-week course costs £595 per person. The Academy is offering free taster days. For more information go to www.thegrooming academy.co.uk
