When I was offered the chance to try out one of top model Alex Leigh’s modelling lessons I jumped at the chance. I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend the day getting make-up and style tips and having a go on the catwalk. Last week we showed you how I was transformed from working woman to... catwalk star.

Me thinks not! But that’s not the point of the Grooming Academy — a 10-week modelling course which Alex has just set up.

She said: “It’s for women who want a bit of advice on how to make the best of themselves. We are not promising to make people stars. Although we give you great tips on how to start out.”

And Alex sure knows her stuff. She has worked in the industry for 15 years and worked with top names including photographers David La Chapelle and graced the pages of glossy magazines such as Vogue and Harpers & Queen.

After having my make-up done, my hair put up in a funky chignon, tips on how to strike a pose and lessons in strutting my stuff on the catwalk I was ready to go. And it was harder than it looks.

You have to strike up a relationship with the camera and you feel slightly silly but once I got into my stride I loved it.

This course would make a great present for any young teenager looking for a step in the right direction of a modelling career — or even if you want to boost your confidence and self-esteem and want to appear more groomed.

The 10-week course costs £595 per person. The Academy is offering free taster days. For more information go to www.thegrooming academy.co.uk

Alex’s top tips

  • Model requirements — you must be aged between 14 and 24. Be a size six to 12 and be between 5ft 8inches and 6ft. It is important to note that Kate Moss if only 5ft 7inches so there is hope yet.
  • You must have good skin, healthy hair, no excessive tattoos or piercings, good bone structure and a good personality.

  • Pitfalls — don’t trust anyone who asks for money up-front. It won’t cost you anything to join a reputable agency. The only time you’ll be asked for money is for test shots for your portfolio.
  • Always have your nails clean, neat and tidy. Always have your roots done if you have coloured hair. Go for regular facials to keep skin fresh. Look after your teeth and get lots of sleep.
