BRIMMING with power, passion and soul, a female-fronted blues rock band returns to Bromley Cross tomorrow (FRI).

StoneWire, with powerhouse front woman Sky Hunter, will be back at the Railway Venue, Chapeltown Road, after a successful gig there last January.

The five-piece band, based in Kent, have been together for about three years and recently released debut album When The Crow Flies.

Leading the charge of dirty, heavy blues is Sky, a singer blessed with massive lungs and the magnetic personality to match.

Looking forward to the gig Sky, originally from Germany, said: "I think that venue is very unique, it's just the right size.

"It's full of people that love live music.

"We've got a following up North, they seem to really us there.

"The easiest way to describe our sound is heavy rock with a Southern blues influence.

"It's quite stompy, it's quite dirty."

Sky has been singing for many years after starting out with gospel choirs and chorus groups.

She said: "I started off with music and stuff like that but I very quickly went into rock music, blues music.

"I'm quite open with the music I listen to, as long as it's played with real instruments and not auto-tuned."

StoneWire draws on classic influences, ranging from Aerosmith to Led Zeppelin, and the band also features guitar maestro Gaz Annable, drummer Rob Glasner, bassist Steve Briggs and guitarist Dan Murphy.

Speaking of being the only woman in the band, Sky said: "It's actually alright.

"We're all friends, we all get on.

"Every now and again I have to crack the whip.

"It works, we're good."

In 2013, the band opened for Michael Schenker on the Swedish leg of his Temple of Rock / Lovedrive Reunion tour and, while in the UK, they have shared stages with groups including Praying Mantis, Never The Bride and Voodoo Six.

Voodoo Six bassist Tony Newton was so impressed by what he heard that, along with guitar icon Pete Friesen who toured the world and recorded with such acts as Alice Cooper, he stepped up to lend his skills and experience to StoneWire in the studio.

Sky said: "We are just getting a little tour together for hopefully March.

"Because we are fairly unknown, we need to get as much exposure as possible so we play as much as we can.

"It's more individual gigs here and there when somebody takes a chance.

"The next step is to get on a tour, get on a bigger support tour and see how far we get."

Giving their classic influences a distinctive, contemporary spin, StoneWire attracted comparisons to the likes of Black Stone Cherry, The Answer and Shinedown upon releasing a self-titled debut EP in 2012, and invitations flooded in to play prestigious support slots and festivals in the UK and Europe.

StoneWire will be at the Railway Venue, Chapeltown Road, Bromley Cross, tomorrow with support from Brazen. Tickets cost £5.
