A FAMOUS film lothario will be trying his charms out on audiences in Bolton.

Made famous by Michael Caine and revived by Jude Law, Alfie has been swooned over by women from the Sixties right through to the Noughties.

Now The Marco Players are bringing the smooth-talking antagonist to the stage next week.

Probably the most well-known of Bill Naughton’s plays, the comedy follows the womaniser and shows how his selfish, self-centred lifestyle impacts on those around him – and ultimately on himself.

Director Jason Crompton said: “I was lucky enough to play Alfie myself some years ago.

“It’s certainly interesting to be reacquainted with the character – sadly, we probably all know an ‘Alfie’ in our life – I know I’ve met a few.”

Taking on the role of the eponymous title character is musician Joel Cheetham, who has taken time out as drummer with Manchester-based group Tamsyn to step into Caine’s shoes.

He said: “It’s a massive part, I’m on stage pretty much for the whole play, and it’s a fantastic challenge which I’ve really relished.

“It’s also interesting playing a character who is a total opposite to me. That’s what acting is all about I suppose.”

Gilly Blair, who plays Gilda with whom Alfie has a child, returns to the Marco stage after a break.

She added: “It’s been very interesting playing a new mother who bonds with her son during the play.

“I was pregnant with my daughter during Carry On Camping, the last thing I did on stage here, and as a new mum I can totally sympathise with my character!”

Audiences can find out from Alfie just exactly what it is all about from Wednesday at Stepping Stones Nursery, in Chorley Old Road.

The production will run until December 3. To book tickets call 01204 841561 or 07756 510462, or visit www.themarcoplayers.net.
