TV cameras create drama at Con club

9:41am Thursday 3rd April 2008

PLODDER Lane Conservative Club was taken over last week - by a TV crew filming a drama series about children's football.

The club was chosen after production officials scoured Bolton for the right type of working men's club to film interior scenes for The Cup.

The story has been adapted from a Canadian series, The Tournament, by Jack Docherty and Moray Hunter, best known for their work on the Scottish sketch show Absolutely.

Starring Steve Edge, who played Alan in Phoenix Nights and Jenifer Hennessy, from Drop Dead Gorgeous, the series centres around pushy parents of an under-11 team who are trying to live their dreams through their children.

Club secretary Alan Daubney said the production team was spotted taking photographs of the club and returned a week later asking to look inside the club.

Then, within days, they came back and asked if they could book the club for three days from Wednesday to Friday last week.

Alan said: "Most of the action seems to take place in the concert room and the club could only open to members once filming for the day was finished.

"All the crew arrived in a minibus, including the directors and actors.

"We asked if they wanted any extras, but they said they didn't - still it's a little bit of fame for the club."
