AFTER years of great food from the Man Yuen Chinese takeaway in Breightmet, we finally made it to the restaurant.
On a Friday evening, I went with my partner and his parents to the Man Yuen Restaurant in Tottington, which opened about four years ago.
It was our belated wedding anniversary present to them, but I won’t tell you how belated.
The entrance is next to the Co-op store and takes you upstairs to a large restaurant, with simple, comfortable decor.
It was busy, with a good, lively buzz. We were whisked straight to a table and ordered drinks — three pints of lager and a Bacardi and diet coke (£11.85). We were left to peruse the extensive menu and were definitely spoilt for choice.
We considered going for one of the banquet options, but decided to create our own.
We chose two appetiser combos to share to start (£9.50 each), which gave us seaweed, spring rolls, prawn toast, salt and pepper chicken wings and dumplings. It was a huge portion and all the items were delicious.
There were plenty of other starters from £2 upwards, with all the usuals and more.
For mains we decided on a dish each and then share. I went for beef in black bean and spring onion and the others picked pork kung po, sweet and sour chicken and chicken cantonese, with all the dishes at £7.80 each.
Again there was a huge choice, including seafood and vegetarian options.
Our egg fried rice was £14 for four portions.
The meals were really tasty and we struggled to choose a favourite, deciding they were all scrumptious.
Despite feeling decidedly full, we looked at the sweet menu and as well as the usual fritters there was a range including cakes and ice-cream to tempt us.
I went for “bombed by chocolate” at £3.20 — chocolate ice-cream covered in chocolate — yum yum.
The others tried the Baileys cheesecake and coppa fantastica — an ice-cream dish, also both £3.20 — and an ice-cream selection at £2.50 — another great course.
We washed it all down with two bottles of Argentinian white wine (£13.50 each) and a cappuccino (£1.90). The service was good, with friendly attentive staff.
The bill came to £117.50, which for three great courses for four people, with drinks, wasn’t bad at all. One of the best Chinese meals I’ve had — highly recommended.
