Tapas bar’s fantastic Mediterranean feast

IF you want a taste of the Mediterranean in Manchester, there is food to die for at Dimitri’s.

The Greek tapas bar, in Campfield Arcade, serves up some fantastic dishes guaranteed to leave you feeling satisfied.

Tapas of any type is a great experience and allows you to indulge yourself a bit more by sampling many different tastes, and we were not disappointed with this sizeable offering.

We started with some dippy — hot pitta bread with dips of your choice. We plumped for guacamole (avocado), tzatziki (yoghurt), skordalia (walnut and garlic) and, best of all, melinzana (aubergine and tomato).

While moreish, it is very easy to fill up at the first station, so don’t go dippy with the dippy!

We then ordered stuffed peppers, king prawns in filo pastry with salsa, fish bites with dip, giant butterbeans in a spicy tomato sauce with crumbly feta, spicy battered aubergine and fried potatoes with salsa.

The peppers, stuffed with rice, cheese and salsa, were a taste treat and the perfect choice, while the king prawns were a royal treat. They were of a decent size and tasted fresh.

The fish bites proved a little dull and dry, but the aubergine was fantastic — if not spicy enough! The butterbeans were melt-in-the-mouth and the overall meal was just what the palette ordered.

We did not order any of the meat options, but there is plenty to choose from with at least a dozen dishes in the four categories on the menu (meaty, fishy, cheesey and veggie).

For those wanting something more akin to a main meal, there are plenty of options, including that old Greek favourite moussaka, kebabs, tagine, spaghetti and salads.

While the food cannot be faulted, the prices are a little steep with the average cost of each tapas dish ranging from £5 to £7.

The portions are generous, but the prices could be much lower if each tapas dish was not a borderline main meal.

The service was fantastic and attentative, and came with that free smile sometimes lacking, while the restaurant is full of Greek charm and character.

It’s a treat for young and old alike at Dimitri’s and there are enough dishes on the menu to ensure everyone leaves plotting their next trip to the restaurant.
