15 things to do when you're bored this Easter

1. FREE: Go for a walk in Jumbles Country Park

If the weather holds up - and the forecast suggests it will - then a stroll around Jumbles Country Park is always a family favourite. This stunning open space can get packed if the temperature's rise, however, so do come prepared. It's an ideal spot for a picnic too.

2. Visit Turton Tower

Set against the beautiful West Pennine Moors, Turton Tower lies nestled amongst ancient trees, with rolling lawns framed by high stone walls. The peaceful and romantic house and grounds are magical places to explore whether you are young or old. The house has evolved over five centuries from a simple defensive tower, to become a luxurious home. Today the house still captures the spirit of the Tudor and Victorian ages and displays one of the finest collections of period furniture and paintings in the region. £4 adults. £3 concessions.

3. FREE: Horse around at Leigh and District horse show

Taking place at Landlords Farm in Westhoughton, you can gasp at the showjumpers' bravery and say "aw" at the tiny tots as well as being in with a chance of winning Easter eggs in the tombola at this local horse show on Easter Sunday. Show ponies, hunters, Arabs, Welsh ponies and more will also be strutting their stuff. Admission is free for spectators, visit the website leighanddistrict.co.uk for more information.

4. FREE: Snap up a bargain at Bury Market

It's free to browse at Bury Market but we'll wager a bet you won't come away without having spent some money at least. The black puddings are the finest in Britain, the experience second to none.

Bury Market bills itself as the World Famous Market. It's a bold claim and open to question but nevertheless remains a top tourist attraction.

5. Travel on the East Lancashire Railway

For a special treat, why not travel on the East Lancs Railway and be pulled along by a steam train on the line between Heywood and Rawtenstall. Run by volunteers, this service has grown into one of the country's most popular attractions and it makes for a fabulous day out.

6. Take a trip to Park Fold Open Farm

They've had a new arrival of easter chicks and children can help bottle feed the easter lambs. Events over the holiday at the farm include, decorate you own easter egg, decorate you own easter bonnet and an easter egg hunt. Adults: £4.00. Children: £3.00. Under 2 years: Free. O.A.P: £3.00. 8. FREE: Relive the past at the Imperial War Museum North

Open from 10am until 6pm with the last admission 30 minutes prior to closing, the Imperial War Museum North has a brand new show, The War at Home, which looks at the experiences of people living at home through the Second World War, and how it affected their lives. Shown every hour on the hour it puts you right in the centre of the action in a profound and personal way.

9. FREE: Become a boffin at The Museum of Science and Industry

Astonishingly for such a large and well-respected museum, MoSI is absolutely free. It is a great venue for a family day out, not only for kids but for adults too. It's very easy to spend an entire day getting lost here - and you can even take a peek at the Coronation Street set from one of the museum's windows.

10. FREE: Get drawn in at Whitworth Art Gallery

Internationally famous for its collections of art and design, the Whitworth Art Gallery which is part of the University of Manchester in northwest England, is home to an impressive range of watercolours, prints, drawings, modern art and sculpture, as well as the largest collections of textiles and wallpapers outside London. The Whitworth is open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 2-5pm.

11. FREE: View New York at Urbis

Urbis explores Urban culture and the cities of today and tomorrow through four floors of exhibitions about city life. It is currently showing State of the Art: New York. You can also visit its marvellous cafe and browse its well-stocked shop which has lots of unique goodies. The top two floors of the building are dedicated to the award winning The Modern restaurant, offering great locally sourced cuisine.

12. FREE: Park yourself up at Heaton Hall

There has been a house on the site of the present Heaton Hall since the late seventeenth century, but the building would have been quite old-fashioned by the time Sir Thomas Egerton, the seventh baronet and later first Earl of Wilton, inherited it in 1756. Significantly, it was not until his marriage to the heiress Eleanor Assheton of Middleton in 1772, that Sir Thomas decided to commission architect James Wyatt to re-model the house. Wyatt had already established a reputation as an innovative architect but Heaton Hall, designed in the fashionable neo-classical style, was his most important country house commission to date.

13. FREE: Enjoy The Lowry A dazzling, award winning building in a stunning waterside location. One of the most exciting art galleries in Britain, explore L S Lowry's life and work in ways that might surprise you and discover something new in its other gallery spaces. Bolton Museum is not open at all over the Easter weekend due to essential work being carried out.
