GROUND-breaking rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar hits the stage from tonight.

In what promises to be an explosive new production, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical will be at the Palace Theatre, Manchester, until Saturday.

Glenn Carter returns as Jesus, a role he has played in the West End, on Broadway and on film.

Welsh Baritone Rhydian Roberts, who shot to fame in 2007 as runner-up on The X Factor, will appear as Pontius Pilot along with fellow finalist Rachel Adedeji, as Mary Magdalene.

Jesus Christ Superstar burst onto the musical scene in 1971, telling the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.

It features some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs including I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright, Gethsemane and Superstar.

Also in the cast are Australian star Tim Rogers, David Burilin and Cavin Cornwall.
