AN amateur cast has been given the chance to perform one of Britain’s most loved sitcoms.

St Paul’s Players will be the first to bring The Vicar of Dibley to the stage in the Bolton area.

It has taken the company nearly three years to secure the rights to be able to perform the show.

The process involved contacting the show’s creator Richard Curtis and getting his permission to stage the comedy.

Later this month auditions open to find Bolton’s very own Geraldine Granger and mad-cap residents of the Oxfordshire village.

Read throughs will take place on April 24 in St Paul’s Church, Adlington, from 7.30pm, followed by the auditions on May 1 at Adlington Community Centre. Both take place from 7.30pm.

The Vicar of Dibley ran on BBC1 from 1994 to 1998 and starred Dawn French.

Players member Jane Harrison added: “What people should know is that Richard Curtis does not get a penny for the licence - it all goes to Comic Relief.

“Also the man who adapted the TV scripts into a play, Ian Gowen, also donates the proceeds to Comic Relief.”
