BOLTON Little Theatre brings arguably the best known work from, again arguably, Britain’s greatest living playwright to the stage at the end of the month with Alan Ayckbourn’s critically acclaimed Absurd Person Singular.

The play, written in 1972, was the first time Ayckbourn has strayed away from simple comedy to present a darker aspect and in fact Absurd Person Singular is often referred to as a ‘tragi-comedy’.

The story follows three couples who meet at a Christmas Eve party over three successive years.

The men all know each other through business with the up and coming Sidney eager initially to impress the confident and successful Geoffrey and the financially secure Ronald. As the years progress though their situation changes significantly and their wives — all 1970s housewives — have their own tales to tell as well.

"I’ve chosen to set the play in its original time of the early 70s," said Simon Mott who takes that mantle again for the society, “It means the social order, and in particular that of the wives — although still very recognisable — is anchored in the appropriate background which was very much apparent when Ayckbourn wrote it."

Two relative newcomers join a strong cast for this Ayckbourn classic with local DJ Robert Hodson playing the confident ‘Geoffrey’ and Andrew Gradwell taking the role of ‘Sidney’, the up-and-coming contractor eager for social and professional advancement.

“This is only my second season at Bolton Little Theatre so it’s great to play get a part as fascinating as ‘Sidney’,” said Andrew, “The character really develops through the play, which I’ve really enjoyed bring across.”

Contrasting them are old hands Peter Scofield as banker ‘Ronald’ and Carol Butler as his wife ‘Marion’.

Carol said: "Marion’s eccentricities have been terrific to get my teeth into.

"They are underscored in no small part by alcohol, which is always great fun to play."

The strong cast also includes Kim Armston as Sidney’s wife Jane and Lisa Barlow as Geoffrey’s wife Eva.

Simon said: "I’ve been very fortune to have such a talented bunch to direct.

"It’s a fantastic play and watching the interaction between the three couples really underlines what a brilliant creator of character’s Ayckbourn is."

Absurd Person Singular runs from January 29 to February 3.
