Orpheus in the Underworld

Until Saturday

THIS lively production of Offenbach’s famous comic operetta is full of colour, energy and great cameo performances.

Director David Kay has produced a faithful, fun-filled piece that keeps the appreciative audience entertained throughout, whilst Musical Director Rod Dakin has assembled a superb orchestra that he leads with aplomb.

Victoria Goulden and Tony Meehan, as Eurydice and Orpheus, commence the proceedings, sparking off each other as they convey their disdain whilst also displaying their impressive singing voices. Strong support comes from Susan Bradley as domineering mother Calliope, and David Griffiths effortlessly provides the villain of the piece as Pluto.

The tongue-in-cheek comic moments ramp up a gear in act two as we meet King of the Gods Jupiter — a commanding performance by Ken Rees, his wife Juno, a perfect comedy cameo by Barbara Mayers, and the remainder of his dysfunctional and dissatisfied clan, with the director providing the funniest characterisation as Mercury.

Act three brings another excellent cameo from David Reeves as Styx, and the infamous toe-tapping Can-Can, presented in style by the talented chorus and dancers.

Special mention for the lighting and costumes — both were superb and added to the overall enjoyment of the show.
