Steel Magnolias
Bolton Little Theatre
POLISHED performances by all cast members gave the audience plenty to laugh and cry about in Robert Harling’s tale set in America’s Deep South.
The story is one of great joy and great sorrow, but the main theme running through it is that of the strength of the tightly interwoven characters and their equally strong relationships to each other.
The title of Harling’s cleverly written play is a reference to southern American women who, like the flower, are made of stronger stuff than you might at first assume.
It is an all-female cast (apart from the male voice of the radio DJ) with Wendy Dawson playing the part of Shelby to perfection.
She is a delightful character, full of life and fun, in spite of suffering from ill-health.
We are very quickly brought up to speed with all the main, extremely strong, women who surround her and each has her own story to tell.
Nina Faulkner is wonderfully funny as the incredibly witty Ouiser and a very talented Lindsay Eavis (Truvy) keeps everyone looking fabulous as they visit her hairdressing salon in Louisiana, where the play is set, to chat and gossip.
Without giving too much away, take along a tissue as you will need it to wipe away a tear or two.
Rachael Bannister as new hairdressing recruit Annelle could not be faulted and special mentions must also be made of Audrey Lias and Carol Butler, as Clairee and M’Lynn respectively. They were word perfect and put in extremely impressive performances.
Every cast member brought their own unique talent to a production that director Frances Clemmitt can take plenty of well-deserved pride in.
Once again Bolton Little Theatre produces a night’s entertainment that you are sure to be talking about for many days to come.
