Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
The Lowry
Salford Quays
Until Sunday
KEITH Jack who was flung from life as a checkout operator in Scotland, to be runner-up in the BBC’s show song contest Any Dream Will Do, now finds himself in the lead role of the Bill Kenwright touring production of Joseph and his Amazing Technolor Dreamcoat.
A dream come true it is for Keith, and his singing squarely matches up to the demands and more of the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber sparkling family musical.
However his acting skills do not, and he is left in the shadows by the fantastic chorus in this show. Their formal stage training dazzles in this production which you can still catch at The Lowry until Sunday.
Keith is clearly enjoying the limelight and laps up the appreciation of the audience who, earlier this week appeared to be dyed in the wool Joseph fans who, judging by the predominance of the grey heads, must have been loving this show since it first hit the stage in the 1970s.
Star of the show for me was the brilliant narrator, which part, ironically, was Keith’s until he was promoted to Joseph last year. I can’t help thinking that the singing role must have suited him better.
Having said that, this is an uproariously fun show and there’s still time to get tickets.
