DAVID Tennant left the TARDIS in a blaze of glory – apt, since the ship was on fire at the time.
This 5-disc set gathers together all the specials that david made in his final year as the good Doctor.
Starting with the Christmas Special from 2008 ‘The Next Doctor’ where he teams up with David Morrissey to defeat The Cybermen.
There is also ‘Planet Of The Dead’ featuring Michelle Ryan.
Then we have ‘The Waters Of Mars’ a dark thriller of an adventure, starring Lindsay Duncan and set on Mars.
But the main attraction is the final adventure; the two-part ‘The End Of Time’.
Shown over Christmas and the New Year, this story has everything we have come to love about David Tennant’s Doctor.
There is humour, tragedy and some extraordinarily superb acting from Tennant and the irrepressible Bernard Cribbins as they join forces to fight not just the reborn Master (John Simm) but the might of the Doctor’s own people – The Time Lords.
Also appearing in the episodes are all the companions and allies that the Doctor has had during his tenure. Catherine Tate, Freema Agyeman, Elisabeth Sladen, John Barrowman and of course Billie Piper.
As previously mentioned, the acting in these episodes is of the highest caliber and the climax has Tennant in an emotional regeneration into the Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith.
Tons of extras include ‘Doctor Who at the Proms’ and all the relevant ‘Confidentials’.
One small gripe is that to get ALL the extras, you need to get the 5-disc box-set.
Some fans may already have the DVD’s of the first two adventures, and indeed there is the option of buying a box-set with just the Winter Specials.
Having said that, it’s well worth it.
