BAFTA nominated actor Christian McKay is set to appear in a new documentary about the birth of Coronation Street.
Titled Florizel Street, the one-off drama features Bury-born McKay as the Canadian producer Harry Elton who commissioned Tony Warren to write a 12-part serial which would grow into the nation’s favourite soap opera.
The drama also stars Jessie Wallace as Pat Phoenix, who played Elsie Tanner, and Celia Imrie as Doris Speed, better known as Annie Walker.
Then-Granada casting director Margaret Morris will be portrayed by Jane Horrocks, while Tony himself will be played by David Dawson.
Ken Roache’s son James will portray his father, who is one of the longest-service members of the Corrie cast.
McKay won worldwide critical acclaim for his role opposite Zac Efron in Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles.
His performance as the renowned director saw him tipped for several awards, but he was beaten to the BAFTA by Christoph Waltz.
