ADVENTUROUS youngsters helped to build themselves a better world as they left technology behind and made their own dens.

Reception and key stage one pupils at Devonshire Road Primary School took part in Save the Children Den Day and left their iPads in their cases to tap into their own creativity.

For £1 to go to the charity, children brought in boxes, blankets, pegs and even branches — anything and everything they could think of to make their very own den.

Children's imaginations went wild, with some creating a castle and taking on the roles of those who would live in such a place, while others creating a wigwam and creative pupils also added decorated their den — including putting up bunting.

Vicky Foy, teacher and key stage one lead, said: "The children designed their dens in the morning and made them in the afternoon.

"They had a fantastic time and very were imaginative.

"At the end of the day they were talking about making a den in the garden

"Children today are surrounded by technology so it was real good of them to take part in something like this and realise you can use the resources you have and not have to spend money."

The dens were showcased to the rest of the school and governors came into judge the dens, crawling inside to have stories read to them, or see children in character.

And for the grown ups it brought back their own childhood memories, with parents having a peer inside the dens.

Mrs Foy said: "Everyone loved it, and the children were doing it for a good cause."

Save the Children said Den Day will be back in 2016, and is "a great way to get creative while raising money to help children around the world."
