BOLTON MP Yasmin Qureshi has called on the British media to do more to counter the threat of Islamic State extremism following last week's Tunisian beach massacre.

Ms Qureshi, MP for Bolton South East, was part of a panel of prominent muslims speaking this morning on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire news programme in the wake of the Friday’s massacre in Sousse, which is thought to have left as many as 30 British tourists dead.

When considering how to tackle the growing threat of ISIS and Islamic Extremism, Ms Qureshi said the media does not do enough to feature Muslims who speak out against ISIS and its actions.

She said: “There are very famous scholars who have publicly said that ISIL (ISIS) is wrong and we need to put that more openly in the media and in our tabloids as front-page headlines.

“Many muslims are rejecting them but that is not always covered in the media.”

“But looking at some of the stuff that ISIL is doing on the internet is counter-acting what they read.

“We also need to look seriously at what is being shown on the internet.”

Ms Qureshi, who has previously criticised Prime Minister David Cameron’s suggestion that some muslims “quietly condone” acts of terrorism, said she would not currently back a military solution in the middle east.

She said: “I wouldn’t necessarily go down that road because there are a lot of repercussions, like instability.

“I think what ISIS is doing is political — they are having their own political battles and wars in the middle east and they are trying to suck other people in.”
